چکیده
Ducts (field-aligned plasma density enhancements) provide a link into the magnetosphere and can guide whistler waves. Inside ducts, wave-particle interactions occur efficiently; therefore, their presence contributes to removal of energetic particles from magnetosphere. We present experimental results concerning characteristics, behavior, excitation thresholds ducts induced by extraordinary (X-mode) polarized high-power HF radio waves emitted towards magnetic zenith (MZ) upper ionosphere at EISCAT (European Incoherent SCATter). The features behavior were diagnosed incoherent scatter radar (ISR) Tromsø CUTLASS (SuperDARN) Finland Hankasalmi. state was monitored Dynasonde in Tromsø. It found that electron Ne enhancements inside 50–80% above background values transverse size (normal flux tube) corresponded about 3–4° north–south direction. They generated during magnetically quiet periods extended ~300 320 km up altitude limit measurements (600–700 km), when heater frequencies both below critical frequency F2 layer (fH ≤ foF2 fH > foF2), regardless whether HF-induced ion lines or not. Comparing O-/X-mode effects observations, it shown creation strong is typical characteristic X-mode pulses. As rule, not observed O-mode A plausible mechanism for artificial discussed.

Focusing of HF radio-waves by ionospheric ducts
This paper presents the first direct observations of HF focusing induced by natural and artificial ionospheric ducts along with a simple theoretical model. The experiments were conducted by injecting HF radio-waves using the Ionospheric Research Instrument of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program located in Gakona, Alaska and detecting them with instruments on the overflying French...

متن کاملThe dependence of F-region electron heating on HF radio pump power: Measurements at EISCAT Tromsø
[1] Measurements of ionospheric electron temperature enhanced by the action of a powerful high-frequency radio wave on the F-region at the EISCAT facility near Tromsø, Norway are analyzed to obtain the electron heat source due to the radio wave as a function of transmitter power. The absorption of the wave in the D-region is accounted for and is found to have a significant influence on the F-re...
متن کاملIonospheric electron heating, optical emissions, and striations induced by powerful HF radio waves at high latitudes: Aspect angle dependence
[1] In recent years, large electron temperature increases of 300% (3000 K above background) caused by powerful HF-radio wave injection have been observed during nighttime using the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar near Tromsø in northern Norway. In a case study we examine the spatial structure of the modified region. The electron heating is accompanied by ion heating of about 100 degrees and mag...
